lamisil tablets (oral) is expensive.. and can effect the liver.

there is a cheaper (but still expensive) medication by prescription only called PenLac.

It is applied topically like a nail polish, and can penitrate the nail to fight the fungus.

It is still a drug.. and can still have side-effects.. but can be less harmfull on the liver. What is the best way to deal with toenail fungus?
Tea Tree Oil - you can purchase at any Sally's Cosmetics or drug store. Also buy the long wooden sticks that are angled on each end. Run warm water and wash your feet - Lift the toenail(s) up slightly and pour some tea tree oil under the nail bed. (I suggest doing this over the tub - it is a little messy). Depending on how bad the fungus is - will depend on how long you will need to do this. You should do at least twice per day for 1 week. After you let the tea tree oil sit in your nail bed for about 5 minutes, take the wooden stick and gently scrape under the nail. I had this happen to me with a pedicure at a very nice salon and this is what they recommended to cure it. It did work - but takes patience. Be sure and rinse the tub with some soap, you don't won't the fungus lingering for the next time you step in the tub. Also wash hands throughly. The tea tree oil will leave a smell on your hands - you can remove this my washing your hands with soap and salt mixed together. Good luck
I have the same problem, and I don't want to go on the meds for the reasons that you mentioned. I don't have a treatment suggestion for you (nothing seems to work...), a cosmetic tip (if it looks really ugly like mine) is fake toenails. You can get them at pretty much any store that sells fake nails. They are great for sandal season and actually look really real!
There has been quite a bit of success with Vicks Vapor Rub.

You have to keep applying it for a month or so daily but many have reported great results from it.
I've heard tea tree oil can help.
