I saw a doctor on tv the other day say that even when treating with anti-fungal medicines the nail might not heal and the infection in many cases has to be grown off the toe.

Like above post, he did say polishes often dont work.

Medication

Antifungal tablets will often clear a fungal nail infection. However, you need to take the tablets for six weeks for fingernail infections, and for 12 weeks for toenail infections, sometimes longer. The medication will also clear any associated fungal skin infection such as athlete's foot.

Studies suggest that in about 5 in 10 cases the nail will look fully normal again after treatment. In about a further 2 in 10 cases the fungus will be cleared from the nail after treatment, but the nail does not look fully normal again. Fingernails tend to respond better to treatment than toenails. One reason for treatment to fail is because some people stop their medication too early.

Be patient. For any treatment to be successful, one of the most important elements is patience. You will have to use the treatment for at least 3 months, and some treatments take even longer to work. Nails grow from the base to the tip, as anyone who has used nail varnish knows. Because it can take 18 months for a nail to be replaced completely by a new one, it may be a long time before you see a result.

Try benzalkonium chloride (ClearZalBac), which you can buy from pharmacies. It is applied twice daily for 2鈥? months for fingernails or 4鈥? months for toenails. It is an antiseptic that kills some bacteria and fungi.

Try tea tree oil. The antifungal treatments that you can buy from the chemist, designed for thrush or for athlete鈥檚 foot, do not penetrate nails and are not worth trying. However, if you really do not want to go to your doctor, you could try tea tree oil, which is available from health shops and chemists. It has some natural antifungal properties and one study found that it improved or cured 60% of cases of toenail infection. Apply it generously twice a day with a cotton-wool bud, wiping it under the tip of the nail and on the surrounding skin. Because it is an oil, it may discolour leather shoes. At night, soak a small piece of cotton wool with the oil, and tape it to the end of your toe.
I suffered for many years from toenail fungus on my big toe. I have tried many of the other solutions and finally got rid of it by using a combination of Zetaclear in the mornings and Vicks Vapor Rub in the evenings. I bought the Vick's at the grocery store and the zetaclear at: http://zetaclearfornailfungus.com/
Depends on what kind of fungus, some of them require a prescription (it's a really harsh prescription too, so it's not to be entered into lightly)
The anti fungal polishes work for some ppl but most of the time ull need a prescribed oral medication...
have you seen that movie ';saw';?
