If you are in a public shower (like fit club or gym) and someone else had it you can get it (always wear shower shoes); additionally if your feet get wet and you don't change your socks immediately, the warm moisture environment will produce bacteria which will get under your nails. Can also be received at a nail salon if they aren't cleaning their instruments well like they are supposed to by long. You MUST seek a podiatrist's assistance you can't get rid of it on your own. It is going to take about 2-3 months of strong antibiotic. No kidding. Don't let anyone else wear your shoes and do not wear anyone else's.Toenail fungus, how does it start and what causes it?

if you have it, who cares where it came from, go get help NOW
It's called Onychomycosis. A fungus gets under your nail and multiplies very well because it is warm and moist in there. It can be treated with a drug you take by mouth called Lamisil or any type of antifungal that gets into your bloodstream.
I see the pharmacy carries over the counter fungus medicines now. My derm told me you should really cut as much of the toenail away as you can in order for the cream to absorb into the skin. You don't have to but it clears up faster that way. And always wear clean/dry socks.
